In a significant move to bolster security for indigenous communities, the Assam government announced plans to establish a dedicated portal for applying for arms licences. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled this initiative on Wednesday, stressing the need for protection in sensitive areas.

The online platform, designed for indigenous residents facing genuine safety threats, will streamline the application process. Strict evaluations, including security assessments and legal compliance, will be conducted to determine eligibility and grant licences.

This decision stems from a state cabinet resolution on May 28, aiming to empower communities in vulnerable regions like Dhubri and Barpeta. The move acknowledges longstanding demands for security measures dating back to the Assam Agitation period of the late 20th century.
