In a significant development, senior Naxalite leader Mallojula Venugopal Rao, also known by his alias Bhupathi, surrendered to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday. The surrender took place in the Gadchiroli district, involving 60 other cadres.
Bhupathi, who had a substantial bounty of Rs 6 crore on his head, was accompanied by his group in surrendering 54 weapons. These weapons included seven AK-47 assault rifles and nine INSAS rifles, according to an official statement.
Bhupathi, also known by another alias, Sonu, was considered one of the most influential strategists within the Maoist movement. He was reputed for supervising platoon operations along the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border, marking his importance in the regional Maoist structure.
