In a landmark move to redefine the future of India’s industrial growth, NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub today launched its visionary roadmap, “Reimagining Manufacturing: India’s Roadmap to Global Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing.” The blueprint charts a bold course for India to emerge as a top-three global hub for advanced manufacturing by 2035, positioning the sector as the central driver of Viksit Bharat @ 2047.

High-Profile Launch in Maharashtra

The roadmap was officially unveiled in the presence of Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra; Shri Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra; Shri B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog; Ms. Madhuri Misal, State Minister; Shri Praveen Pardeshi, Chief Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister and CEO, MITRA; Ms. Debjani Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow, NITI Aayog; and Shri Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, alongside senior policymakers, industry leaders, and experts.

The launch event, held in Pune, reflected Maharashtra’s growing prominence as a manufacturing and innovation hub. The state government committed to becoming the first in India to align fully with the National Mission on Manufacturing, integrating frontier technologies across industries.

A Strategic Blueprint for the Next Industrial Era

The roadmap identifies Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Advanced Materials, Digital Twins, and Robotics as pivotal technologies to transform India’s manufacturing ecosystem. It highlights their impact across 13 priority sectors, ranging from electronics and automotive to pharmaceuticals, textiles, and renewable energy.

By 2035, the plan envisions:

  • Manufacturing contributing over 25% to India’s GDP

  • The creation of over 100 million high-quality jobs

  • India ranking among the top three global hubs for advanced manufacturing

Confronting Challenges and Seizing Opportunities

Despite India’s rising manufacturing potential, the roadmap warns that delays in adopting frontier technologies could cost the nation USD 270 billion in additional manufacturing GDP by 2035, and up to USD 1 trillion by 2047. To prevent this, it prescribes a 10-year strategic action plan focused on:

  • Strengthening R&D and innovation ecosystems

  • Upgrading industrial infrastructure and logistics

  • Accelerating workforce reskilling and digital training

  • Promoting sector-specific technology deployment

  • Building collaborative industry-academia partnerships

Voices of Leadership

“Maharashtra expresses its gratitude to NITI Aayog for preparing this visionary roadmap for Bharat’s manufacturing growth powered by frontier technologies,” said Shri Devendra Fadnavis, emphasizing Pune’s emerging role as India’s innovation nucleus. “If India has to achieve exponential growth, it cannot come from business-as-usual. Frontier Tech is the marriage of science and technology, and when this union enters manufacturing, it drives automation, efficiency, and global competitiveness.”

Shri B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, underscored the urgency of transformation: “India’s economic ascent hinges on the strength of our manufacturing sector, but incremental change will not suffice. This roadmap sets a decisive, time-bound course to become an Advanced Manufacturing Powerhouse by 2035.”

Ms. Debjani Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow, NITI Aayog, echoed the sentiment: “Frontier technologies must modernize the very backbone of our economy. By embedding technology into our industrial DNA, we can ensure that our factories become symbols of innovation and national strength.”

Collaborative Development and Industry Participation

The roadmap was developed jointly by NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and Deloitte, with guidance from an Expert Council comprising top industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers. The collaboration represents a rare convergence of public vision, private expertise, and policy innovation.

Towards Viksit Bharat @ 2047

The document aligns closely with India’s long-term developmental vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047, emphasizing the role of technology, skill development, and sustainability in economic transformation. It seeks to shift India’s global manufacturing identity from a low-cost producer to a high-tech, high-value innovator.

As India stands at the cusp of a new industrial age, the roadmap calls for decisive action and unified commitment. With coordinated investment in technology, research, and human capital, India could redefine global supply chains and emerge as a resilient, innovation-led manufacturing superpower.
