In a significant development, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was detained by federal police, as confirmed by his lawyer on Saturday. This marks the end of his house arrest as he continues to appeal a Supreme Court conviction related to his alleged attacks on Brazil's democratic fabric.

The cause for Bolsonaro's latest detention remains undisclosed by his attorney, but sources familiar with the events suggest it is linked to conditions surrounding his prior house arrest. Back in September, the same former right-wing leader faced a 27-year and three-month prison sentence for attempting a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 presidential election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

During his house arrest, Bolsonaro was prohibited from using social media, although he did receive visits from political allies. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump, a known supporter during Bolsonaro's presidency, labeled the judicial proceedings against him as a 'witch hunt', while rolling back sanctions on Brazil.
