The Supreme Court, on Friday, sought answers from the Central government concerning claims that female sanitation workers at Maharashi Dayanand University were asked to present photographic evidence of menstruation. Justices BV Nagarathna and R Mahadevan issued official notices, reflecting concern over the mentalities underpinning such demands.
In light of similar progressive measures, like period leaves in Karnataka, Justice Nagarathna questioned the need for invasive proof to justify menstrual leave. The court aims to advocate for women's rights, with hopes of progressive outcomes from the petition.
The complaint has led to sexual harassment charges against three individuals affiliated with the university. Post allegations and police involvement, the institution has suspended the involved supervisors and initiated an internal probe, promising vigilance and justice for the affected workers.
