The Odisha government has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to tackle left-wing extremism by revising its Maoist surrender policy, offering substantial financial incentives. Top Maoist leaders surrendering in the state could receive up to Rs 1.20 crore, including significant rewards for surrendered firearms as part of this initiative.
Announced by Sanjeeb Panda, Additional Director General of Police (Anti-Naxal Operations), the revised policy categorizes surrendered cadres based on their ranks. High-ranking cadres are under Category A, while lower-ranking cadres fall into Category B, each receiving varying compensation for cooperation.
Additional benefits for surrendered Maoists include housing, marriage incentives, and skill development programs. The state promises confidentiality to informers while continuing trials of major crimes committed by surrendered cadres. Fast-track courts may be established for speedy resolution of cases, offering potential plea bargains for minor offenses.
