German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will undertake his inaugural official visit to Israel from December 6 to 7, a government spokesperson announced.
During the visit, Merz is scheduled to hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on December 7, focusing on bilateral ties, the ongoing ceasefire in Gaza, and other pressing international matters. He will also pay respects at the Yad Vashem memorial and engage with local community leaders.
Despite Germany's longstanding support for Israel, tensions have surfaced due to the Israeli government's approach to the conflict in Gaza. In a recent development, Germany has decided to lift a suspension on arms sales to Israel, provided the ceasefire holds and humanitarian aid continues to flow.
