A significant breakthrough was reported as the CBI, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, apprehended Shafat Ahmed Shanglu on Monday. This arrest ties back to the notorious 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiyya Sayeed, the daughter of then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed.
Shanglu, allegedly a confidant of JKLF chief Yasin Malik and previously involved with the banned group's finances, was detained in Srinagar following due legal processes. This marks progress in a case that has remained unresolved for 36 years.
The arrest dovetails with the CBI's broader investigative efforts, which saw the agency appointing Monika Kohli as the chief prosecutor to expedite the trials linked to Sayeed's abduction and other high-profile terror activities in the late 1980s.
