Reaffirming its commitment to clean sport, the Government of India has significantly intensified its anti-doping initiatives through the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA). The agency has expanded its testing capacity for 2025, planning 7,751 dope control tests, an increase from 7,474 tests in 2024 and 5,794 tests in 2023. This steady rise highlights India’s stronger surveillance, wider athlete coverage, and a firm resolve to eliminate doping practices from competitive sports.
Digital Transformation Through NIDAMS
To modernize operations and enhance accountability, the Government has recently launched the NADA India Data Administration and Management System (NIDAMS). This digital platform streamlines multiple key processes:
-
Real-time planning of athlete testing
-
Automated generation of mission orders
-
Availability tracking of Doping Control Officers (DCOs)
-
Improved transparency and integrity in sample collection
-
Seamless compliance with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) international standards
NIDAMS represents a major step towards reliable data management, reduced human error, and faster processing of test results, ultimately building greater trust within the sporting ecosystem.
Strengthened Anti-Doping Measures Across High-Performance Training Centres
NADA has been expanding its outreach and educational programmes, particularly targeting High-Performance Training Centres (HPTCs), where elite athletes prepare for national and international competitions. Key initiatives include:
Comprehensive Education and Awareness
-
Nationwide programmes for athletes, coaches, trainers, and medical teams on prohibited substances, Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE), supplement safety, and whereabouts compliance.
-
Dedicated anti-doping booths and information centres at major sporting events.
-
Partnerships with Sports Authority of India, Khelo India, and state bodies to ensure consistent awareness across HPTCs and centres of excellence.
Advanced Testing Protocols
-
Regular in-competition and out-of-competition testing, including unannounced checks at HPTCs and training venues.
-
Inclusion of high-performance athletes in the Registered Testing Pool (RTP) with obligations under the ADAMS/Whereabouts system for monitoring.
-
Intelligence-led testing that targets risk patterns and maximizes testing effectiveness.
Collaborative and Technology-Driven Prevention
-
Joint efforts with National Sports Federations (NSFs), SAI, and academic institutions to standardize anti-doping practices nationwide.
-
Promotion of the "Know Your Medicine" (KYM) app and the ADEL learning platform, empowering athletes to identify banned substances and avoid inadvertent doping.
-
Continuous communication through social media, TV, radio, and video-based educational resources to keep athletes and support staff updated on rule changes.
National Coverage Under WADA Framework
NADA’s mandate spans the entire country—including Himachal Pradesh—ensuring uniform testing, education, and compliance under the global WADA Code. The approach emphasizes a stronger foundation of awareness, scientific testing, digital monitoring, and ethical sportsmanship.
Commitment to Clean Sports
The information was presented by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. The Government's reinforced strategy underscores the mission to protect athletes, uphold fair play, and advance India’s reputation on the international sporting stage.
