Expelled Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil is embroiled in controversy as he faces allegations of sexual assault from two women. On Friday, Mamkootathil approached the Kerala High Court seeking interim protection from arrest following the rejection of his anticipatory bail plea by a Thiruvananthapuram sessions court.
This legal setback arose after the first case of rape and forced abortion was registered against him last week. A subsequent charge was filed based on a complaint from another woman residing in Bengaluru. The developments have led to his expulsion from the Congress party, which had already suspended him.
Mamkootathil asserts his innocence, contending that his first relationship was consensual and that the complaint was lodged due to personal issues. He also accuses the investigation agency of distorting facts and insists he is ready to cooperate with the probe if assured of his freedom from arrest. The High Court is set to hear his plea shortly.
