In a significant policy shift, the Assam government announced the relaxation of its two-child norm for several communities, including ST, SC, tea garden, Moran, and Matak, on Friday.
According to the new amendment, these groups can now have up to three children and still remain eligible for government employment, contest elections, and receive incentives for Self Help Groups.
This decision, as confirmed by the Health and Family Welfare Department, seeks to prevent the extinction of these communities by helping them maintain their unique identities.
