Andre Russell, the formidable all-rounder known for his prowess in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has announced his retirement from the tournament, marking the end of an era with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). However, he isn't stepping away from the franchise entirely. In a novel move, Russell will join KKR as a 'Power Coach' from the 2026 season, a role crafted specifically for him by franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, KKR CEO Venky Mysore shed light on the decision to release Russell ahead of the recent IPL auction. Retaining the star player at Rs 12 crore was financially untenable due to his Rs 18 crore valuation. Mysore expressed the difficulty in parting ways with Russell, emphasizing the emotional bond shared over the years.

The new coaching role aims to harness Russell's invaluable experience and instinctual power on the field. Known for his clutch performances and athleticism, Russell is set to mentor and inspire KKR's next generation. His legacy as a player now transitions into this unique coaching position, blending skill, experience, and a touch of Shah Rukh Khan's vision.
