Tensions Surge: Thai Airstrikes Target Cambodian Artillery Amid Ceasefire Breach
Thailand launched airstrikes on Cambodian military sites in response to potential threats from long-range artillery targeting civilian areas. The confrontation marks the most severe conflict since July's clash. Both nations accuse each other of violating a ceasefire. The crisis underscores the fragile peace between these Southeast Asian neighbors.
In a rapid escalation of hostilities, Thailand conducted airstrikes on Cambodian military facilities on Monday. The action was taken following intelligence reports that indicated the potential use of long-range artillery by Cambodia to target civilian zones, according to a senior Thai military official.
The Thai military highlighted specific threats from Soviet-designed BM-21 and Chinese-made PHL-03 rockets. Despite plans to adhere to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, tensions reignited after a landmine injured a Thai soldier. As a precaution, Thailand suspended its withdrawal of heavy weapons from the border.
The deployment of air power was intended to deter further aggression and protect civilians after Cambodia allegedly mobilized heavy weaponry. Representatives from both countries continue to exchange blame as international observers monitor the situation closely.
