Taking decisive action against Delhi's severe air pollution, the Supreme Court has asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to consider closing or relocating nine toll plazas at the capital's borders.
The court aims to alleviate traffic congestion and vehicular emissions, labeling the pollution crisis as an 'annual feature' demanding practical solutions. The bench called for effective implementation of existing protocols, highlighting a weak enforcement record.
The court ordered financial aid for construction workers affected by restrictions and urged the Delhi government to offer alternative employment. It stressed strengthening long-term air quality strategies and listed further hearing on a related PIL in January.
