The Government is investing more than $450,000 in a new international tourism campaign aimed at attracting overseas visitors to the Waikato and central North Island, as part of efforts to drive regional growth during the autumn travel season.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston announced $459,250 in funding for the One Flight campaign, which will promote seasonal travel deals and themed itineraries designed to draw international visitors—particularly from Australia—via direct flights to Hamilton Airport.

“I’m excited that visitors will be able to experience the best the Waikato region has to offer from the moment their flight touches down,” Upston said.

Showcasing the Heart of the North Island

The campaign will highlight a wide range of experiences across the region, including:

  • Cycling the Waikato River Trails

  • Exploring the Hobbiton Movie Set

  • Visiting the Waitomo glowworm caves

  • Discovering the Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth

  • Enjoying autumn landscapes, farmers’ markets and local hospitality

“This campaign celebrates everything that makes the region unique,” Upston said. “Autumn brings a vibrant new perspective to our landscapes, our markets are in full swing, and our hospitality is always warm.”

Regional Collaboration Driving Impact

One Flight is being delivered through a regional partnership led by Hamilton & Waikato Tourism, working alongside Destination Great Lake Taupō, Visit Ruapehu, and Venture Taranaki.

The collaboration will roll out new travel deals, bookable packages and themed itineraries, making it easier for international visitors to explore multiple destinations across the central North Island in a single trip.

“Seasonal deals and new itineraries will support local businesses, create jobs, and showcase the pride locals feel for their communities,” Upston said.

Part of Wider Tourism Boost

The initiative is one of five projects supported under Round Two of the Regional Tourism Boost, which totals $3.69 million. The programme is designed to increase international visitation to regional New Zealand during autumn and early winter 2026, supporting year-round tourism growth and stronger regional economies.
