Mizoram witnessed a significant statewide drill on Thursday, simulating an earthquake scenario to test emergency response, rescue, and relief preparedness across its districts. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in partnership with the state's Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, orchestrated the drill to refine coordination and prompt response in the event of a real earthquake.
The exercise involved a variety of mock scenarios such as building collapses, fires, and mass casualties, staged in 36 locations at 10 a.m. The mock drill saw participation from diverse forces, including district quick response teams, fire services, and both national and state disaster response forces, as well as local volunteers and NGOs. Nearby states, Assam and Tripura, also contributed personnel to fortify the exercise.
In Aizawl, a major hub during the drill, Lok Bhavan was set up as a relief camp while other locations served as staging areas. NDMA senior consultant Brigadier Ravinder Gurung (Retd) supervised operations via video conferences from the State Emergency Operation Centre, ensuring live monitoring of incident sites and relief camps. The drill emphasized Mizoram's high-risk status in Seismic Zone V, underlining the importance of thorough preparedness initiatives.
