In a significant legal development, a court in Bangladesh's southeastern port city of Chattogram indicted Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and 38 others on charges related to the death of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, which occurred in November 2024.

Das, a prominent figure and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, was apprehended at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for alleged sedition. His arrest ignited protests in Dhaka and other areas, some of which turned violent, leading to Alif's death.

Charged under Sections 302 and 109 of the Penal Code, Das and 22 other defendants will face trial. With many considering the case sensitive, it touches on underlying communal tensions and has international implications, affecting Bangladesh-India relations due to New Delhi's expressed concern over Das's detention.
