Escalation in South Sudan: SPLA-IO's Strategic Push Toward Juba

JUBA, Jan 19 - South Sudan's opposition, the SPLA-IO, has seized the town of Pajut, keying an escalation toward the capital, Juba. After capturing Pajut, located over 300 km north of Juba, the SPLA-IO has ordered its forces to advance on the capital, threatening Kiir's government.

Violent clashes have multiplied across the country, marking an unexpected resurgence since the 2018 peace agreement. The UN has condemned the deliberate violation of this deal, citing indiscriminate attacks as indicators of intensifying unrest. This conflict follows the SPLA-IO's history of clashes with government loyalists.

Former Vice President Riek Machar, now on trial, contests charges of treason linked to recent violence. Citizens have been displaced due to the fighting, fleeing to inhospitable areas. Efforts to restore peace are at risk, raising international concerns for South Sudan's stability.
