A key figure in the 2021 Aligarh hooch tragedy, Pramod Gupta, has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The sentencing was delivered by Additional District Judge Amit Kumar Tiwari, who found Gupta guilty under Indian Penal Code sections for his role in supplying methanol, leading to over 100 deaths.
The tragedy unfolded while the state grappled with the Covid-19 pandemic, hitting the poor and marginalized hardest. District officials registered 31 FIRs related to the deaths, signalling widespread legal repercussions for the illicit liquor trade. Two other key players had also been sentenced in related judgments delivered in 2024.
The verdict has been met with relief, especially in villages severely affected by the tragedy. Activists argue the death toll surpassed official figures, while the sentencing marks a pivotal moment in combating illegal liquor networks in the district.
