In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case. This move was lauded by Majithia's party, who argued that the ruling exposed a political vendetta orchestrated by the Aam Aadmi Party and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The bench, comprised of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, overturned a prior decision by the Punjab and Haryana High Court that had denied Majithia bail in December last year. The court noted that Majithia had previously secured bail in a related narcotics case, highlighting inconsistencies in the prosecution's arguments.
Despite the court's decision, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema warned that bail doesn't equate to exoneration and suggested reviewing the order for possible appeals. Meanwhile, Akali leaders criticized the AAP administration's attempts to suppress political opposition through dubious legal strategies, promising political repercussions for such actions.
