Lebanon-Syria Relations: Navigating New Dynamics Post-Assad
Lebanon's ties with Syria have shifted dramatically since Bashar Assad's fall, as both countries navigate complex historical grievances. While forging treaties on prisoner transfers, Lebanon remains vigilant against potential threats from Syrian ex-officials within its borders. Meanwhile, tensions with Israel persist over border control and Hezbollah's disarmament.

Lebanon's diplomatic landscape has transformed following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad. Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri highlighted the shift, noting Syria's reduced interference in Lebanon's domestic affairs. Under new treaties, Lebanese authorities are transferring sentenced Syrian prisoners back to Syria, marking new cooperation between the nations.
Despite the positive diplomatic moves, Lebanon continues to face challenges, particularly regarding the 2,500 Syrian prisoners currently detained. A treaty proposal aims to transfer those awaiting trial to Syria, pending Lebanese parliamentary approval. Moreover, Lebanon and Syria are forming investigative teams to address missing individuals from both nations during Assad's regime.
In parallel, Lebanon confronts persistent tensions with Israel, exacerbated by continued Israeli strikes and occupation near the border. While Lebanon's army moves forward with disarmament plans targeting non-state actors like Hezbollah, these efforts are complicated by Israel's noncompliance with ceasefire agreements. Discussions remain confined to ceasefire monitoring as Lebanon seeks a neutral force to ensure border stability.
