A college student in Kolkata has been detained by local police for allegedly orchestrating a major heist involving gold jewellery valued at over Rs 2 crore and Rs 26.5 lakh in cash. The theft occurred in the city's southern Sarsuna area, according to law enforcement sources.
The 20-year-old, pursuing a BCA degree, reportedly drew inspiration from watching crime thrillers. A senior officer noted the student's fascination with achieving wealth through shortcuts, driven by a desire for a luxurious lifestyle without the rigors of academia. Known by the nickname 'Tukli,' he had faced expulsion from school in class XI for cheating.
Police investigations have revealed that the accused meticulously planned the robbery, having targeted an acquaintance's flat known to contain substantial cash and gold. Using a bar of soap to model a duplicate key, he further executed the plan with an electric saw and money-counting machine. Police later recovered the stolen items from a related location following a tip-off from his girlfriend, leading to the student's arrest.
