The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), under the BJP's rule, has initiated strict measures against those involved in acquiring fake birth certificates, specifically targeting 'illegal Bangladeshis' and the officials aiding them, according to mayor Ritu Tawde's recent announcement.
Investigations have uncovered 237 fraudulent birth certificates within the city, with original copies yet to be recovered from beneficiaries. Mayor Tawde has emphasized an expedited confiscation process, warning of stringent actions against non-compliant officials as illegal issuance leads to eight FIRs and the suspension of two health department officers.
Criticism of the BJP's focus has emerged, with Shiv Sena leaders and NCP spokespersons accusing the party of diverting attention from core civic issues, such as infrastructure and public amenities, reflecting broader political dynamics amidst an ongoing crackdown against illegal immigrants.
