A tragic accident involving a 27-year-old man named Jeys Benny has sparked protests and prompted an investigation in Idukki district. Benny fell into an open pit by the roadside late on Monday night, while riding a two-wheeler, resulting in his untimely death.
The pit, dug as part of a local construction project, lacked essential safety measures such as barricades or warning signs. In response to public outrage, state Public Works Department Minister Mohammed Riyas ordered a probe conducted by the deputy chief engineer, vowing stringent actions if negligence is proven.
CCTV footage showing the accident has fueled public anger, leading to protests by local residents and the Opposition UDF. Demonstrators accuse the Public Works Department of gross negligence and demand immediate accountability and preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
