A 16-year-old girl, reportedly a victim of sexual assault, has committed suicide at her home in Meppadi, local authorities disclosed on Wednesday. The girl, a high school student, had been struggling with psychological challenges for several years and was in psychiatric care, as per police reports.
She had disclosed the harrowing instances of assault at the hands of a relative and a neighbor only recently during a session with her psychiatrist, who then informed her father. In response, the father alerted the school counselor, who subsequently reported the matter to the police, leading to prompt arrests under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
According to the police, the ongoing investigation seeks to uncover further details, given the girl's prolonged mental stress predating the assaults. Authorities are continuing efforts to record statements and gather evidence to gain a comprehensive understanding of the case.
