A court in Maharashtra's Beed district has temporarily released Jairam Chate, accused in the murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, to attend his brother's post-death rituals. Despite being jailed for his alleged involvement in the crime, Chate will be under strict police protection during the ceremony.
The court allowed Chate to leave prison between 9 am and 4 pm, citing humanitarian grounds, after his lawyer filed a special application. However, the relief was granted despite opposition from Assistant Government Prosecutor Balasaheb Kolhe and objections raised by Deshmukh's family, who voiced concerns about potential law-and-order issues.
Chate is accountable for his travel and security expenses. Deshmukh's family questioned who would be responsible for any incidents during the visit. Deshmukh was allegedly killed for opposing extortion from a wind energy firm, with Walmik Karad named as the prime accused.
