The Punjab government has introduced a groundbreaking digital Flood Relief System, allocating Rs 1,010 crore for comprehensive disaster relief and mitigation after last year's catastrophic floods, announced Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema during the 2025-26 budget presentation.
This system marks India's first fully digital response to such disasters, eliminating intermediaries to ensure swift and transparent aid distribution through geo-tagged surveys and real-time monitoring. The government reports that nearly all beneficiaries received aid within months, a significant improvement over past delays.
In addition to digital innovation, the state conducted a scientific assessment of major rivers, identifying 371 flood protection projects, with 142 targeted for March 2026 completion. Moreover, efforts to desilt 3,000 kilometers of drainage channels have reinforced Punjab's long-term flood resilience, Cheema noted.
