An Indian Armed Forces contingent has arrived in Seychelles to participate in the 11th edition of the joint military exercise "LAMITIYE-2026" with the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF), marking a significant step in strengthening defence cooperation between the two countries.
The 12-day exercise, being conducted from 9 to 20 March 2026 at the Seychelles Defence Academy, aims to enhance operational coordination, interoperability and mutual understanding between the armed forces of the two nations.
First Tri-Service Participation by India
This year's edition marks an important milestone as it features participation from all three services of the Indian Armed Forces — the Army, Navy and Air Force — for the first time in the exercise.
The Indian contingent includes troops from the ASSAM Regiment, along with naval and air force elements. The Indian Navy has deployed INS Trikand, a frontline stealth frigate, while the Indian Air Force is participating with a C-130 transport aircraft.
Officials said the tri-service participation highlights India's commitment to expanding defence cooperation and maritime security partnerships in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
'LAMITIYE': Two Decades of Defence Cooperation
The exercise LAMITIYE, meaning "Friendship" in the Creole language, is a biennial training event conducted in Seychelles since 2001.
Over the years, the joint exercise has evolved into a key platform for military cooperation, joint training and knowledge exchange between India and Seychelles, strengthening bilateral defence ties and regional security collaboration.
Focus on Sub-Conventional Operations
The 2026 edition will focus primarily on Sub-conventional Operations in a Semi-Urban environment, a scenario increasingly relevant in modern security challenges.
The training will include:
-
Joint planning and coordination of tactical missions
-
Counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism drills
-
Neutralisation of potential threats in semi-urban terrain
-
Use of new-generation military equipment and technology
These exercises aim to prepare troops to effectively respond to complex operational situations that may arise during peacekeeping missions or regional security operations.
Strengthening Peacekeeping Cooperation
Another key objective of the exercise is to enhance coordination during Peacekeeping Operations, where forces from both nations may work together under international mandates.
Through joint drills and operational simulations, the exercise will help improve interoperability and tactical coordination, enabling the two forces to operate seamlessly during multinational missions.
Comprehensive Training Programme
The 12-day joint training programme will feature a range of activities designed to improve operational readiness and exchange professional expertise.
Key components of the exercise include:
-
Field Training Exercises
-
Tactical combat discussions
-
Case studies on operational scenarios
-
Military lectures and demonstrations
-
Equipment familiarisation sessions
The exercise will culminate in a two-day validation exercise, where troops will jointly execute coordinated operations based on the training modules conducted during the programme.
Strengthening Bilateral Military Relations
Officials noted that LAMITIYE-2026 will also provide an opportunity for both sides to share best practices, operational experiences and technological insights.
The exercise is expected to significantly enhance mutual understanding, joint operational capabilities and strategic cooperation between the Indian Armed Forces and the Seychelles Defence Forces.
By deepening defence engagement and promoting interoperability, the exercise also contributes to strengthening regional stability and security in the Indian Ocean Region.
