Ex-Syrian Official Convicted: Torture Verdict in Los Angeles

A Los Angeles federal jury has convicted Samir Ousman Alsheikh, a former Syrian government official, on charges of torture, the U.S. Justice Department announced Monday. Alsheikh, 73, once headed the Damascus Central Prison during Bashar al-Assad's rule, and faces serious charges relating to acts of torture at the facility.

The jury found Alsheikh guilty on one count of conspiracy to commit torture and three counts of torture. Additionally, he was convicted of lying to immigration authorities about his criminal activities in an attempt to fraudulently obtain a U.S. green card and citizenship.

Alsheikh's conviction highlights his role in inflicting severe pain on prisoners to suppress opposition to the Assad government. Facing multiple decades in prison, Alsheikh remains in custody awaiting sentencing, while his legal team plans to appeal the verdict.
