In a bold move, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced plans to seek water royalties from Rajasthan, reigniting a century-old issue. According to Mann, the neighboring state owes a staggering Rs 1.44 lakh crore for water received since 1960.

This demand stems from a 1920 tripartite agreement, where Rajasthan used to pay Punjab for water until 1960. Mann pointed out that Rajasthan continues to draw 18,000 cusecs of water without payment, despite the agreement.

Punjab has reached out to Rajasthan for discussions, and Mann hinted that the central government may also be involved in resolving this long-standing dispute.
