Tragic Death at ICE Detention Center Sparks Outcry
A 19-year-old, Royer Perez Jimenez, died in ICE custody at the Glades County Detention Center, prompting calls for investigation and reform. His death, suspected as suicide, adds to a troubling trend of fatalities under immigration detention, raising concerns over facility conditions and the treatment of detainees.
A young man, identified as Royer Perez Jimenez from Mexico, was found dead at the Glades County Detention Center, managed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). His death marks the youngest fatality under immigration custody in President Trump's renewed administration.
Initial findings suggest a presumed suicide, according to ICE, though the cause remains under investigation. Efforts by detention staff to resuscitate Perez Jimenez failed after he was found unresponsive. This year alone, 13 immigrant deaths have occurred in federal custody.
The Mexican foreign ministry has urged U.S. authorities to examine the circumstances surrounding this incident, emphasizing the need for accountability and measures to prevent recurrence. ICE maintains its commitment to providing safe and humane conditions for detainees, amid last year's record-high of 31 deaths in federal custody.
