A recent catastrophic fire in the Palam area of Delhi has underscored significant inadequacies in fire safety measures. Highly inflammable materials such as garments, cosmetics, and perfumes were found stored in the building's basement, as confirmed by the initial fire department report.
Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood took the opportunity to criticize the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for leveraging the tragic incident for playing vulture politics. Sood further accused the previous administration of failing to modernize the fire services adequately.
In response, the government quickly acted by announcing a magisterial inquiry and extending ex gratia payments to the affected families. Meanwhile, plans for improving the state's fire response capabilities are under review, including setting up a new Command and Control Centre and deploying quick response vehicles.
