On Thursday, India strongly condemned the deadly attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, calling for the inviolability of the mission amidst escalating violence in the region. This follows the deaths of two Indonesian peacekeepers, sparking global concerns for safety.

The deaths occurred against a backdrop of increasing tension between the Israeli Defense Forces and Hezbollah, with Israel's military recently announcing plans to expand its ground offensive. India, a major contributor to UN military personnel deployment, emphasized the need for accountability and safety of the peacekeepers.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted India's significant contribution to peacekeeping missions, particularly in UNIFIL, where around 600 Indian troops are stationed. UNIFIL, established in 1978 to facilitate Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, is currently investigating the tragic incidents, according to UN Peace Operations head Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
