Courage Amidst Conflict: Pakistan's Polio Battleground
In Pakistan, polio vaccination efforts face violence as attacks in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces resulted in one police officer killed and another injured. Despite these setbacks, Pakistan continues its anti-polio campaign. The Balochistan Liberation Army and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the assaults.
In a troubling escalation of violence against health initiatives, a police officer was killed and another wounded in two separate incidents targeting polio vaccination teams in Pakistan on Wednesday, authorities disclosed.
The attacks unfolded amid Pakistan's ongoing battle against polio, one of the few countries where the virus still persists. The first attack occurred in Dera Murad Jamali within Balochistan province, where an unidentified gunman opened fire on a police escort during a vaccination team's lunch break, resulting in one constable's death, reported senior police officer Asad Nasar. The vaccination team remained unharmed.
In a separate incident in Hangu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, sniper fire injured a police officer accompanying another team. These vaccination groups are protected by police in Pakistan due to frequent attacks, often fueled by extremist propaganda labeling the health campaigns as Western plots. Undeterred, Pakistan's government vowed to continue its second phase of anti-polio efforts, launched on April 13, amidst claims of responsibility from both the Balochistan Liberation Army and the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.
