The Delhi Assembly is set to hold a special session on April 28, focusing on the contentious women's reservation issue after related bills were quashed in the Lok Sabha. The BJP has criticized the opposition for allegedly betraying women, leading several BJP-governed states to organize similar assembly sessions to highlight this critical matter.
According to the Delhi Assembly secretariat, the Fifth Session of the Eighth Legislative Assembly will commence at 11 AM in the Assembly Hall on Tuesday and initially expected to span one day to deliberate on the women's quota bill, with the possibility of extension if further discussion is needed.
The Constitution Amendment Bill, designed to implement a 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures by 2029 and expand the Lok Sabha seats, suffered defeat in the Lower House earlier this month. The Congress and other opposition factions, opposing the bill, have accused the government of using it as a pretext for delimitation prior to a caste census. Despite 298 members supporting the bill, 230 MPs opposed it, falling short of the required 352 votes for passage.
