The deceased, identified as 41-year-old Sarath Prasad from Punnapra, was earlier arrested following an alleged attack on a doctor at the Alappuzha General Hospital.
According to police reports, Sarath Prasad allegedly used his clothing to hang himself from a ventilation opening after climbing onto a pipe inside his cell. This distressing event was discovered when inmates were released for meals, prompting an immediate response from jail officials who found him unresponsive.
An investigation into the circumstances of his death is being conducted by the Alappuzha South police, alongside an inquiry by jail authorities. As procedures continue, the body will be sent for a post-mortem examination before being returned to his family.
