Entrepreneurs across eThekwini Municipality are racing against time as the deadline for the highly anticipated 2026 Lions' Den Business Plan Competition closes today, 30 April. With only hours remaining, small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs) and co-operatives are being urged to seize the opportunity to access funding, mentorship and market exposure through one of the city's flagship enterprise development programmes.
Run annually by the eThekwini Municipality, the Lions' Den Competition has evolved into a powerful catalyst for local economic growth, supporting innovative entrepreneurs at various stages of business development. The programme is specifically designed to nurture sustainable enterprises, enhance competitiveness, and stimulate job creation in Durban's dynamic economic landscape.
A Launchpad for Innovation and Business Growth
The competition goes beyond a traditional pitch event, offering a comprehensive support ecosystem that includes:
-
Expert mentorship from industry leaders
-
Tailored business development support
-
Access to funding and investment opportunities
-
Networking with strategic partners and investors
By integrating these elements, the initiative aims to transform promising ideas into scalable, market-ready businesses, contributing to inclusive economic development within the municipality.
Three-Tier Competition Structure to Support Diverse Businesses
To ensure fair competition and targeted support, entries are categorised based on annual turnover:
-
Emerging Enterprises: Less than R100,000 turnover
-
Established Businesses: Between R100,000 and R500,000 turnover
-
High-Performing Enterprises: Above R500,000 turnover
This tiered structure allows businesses at different growth stages to compete on an equal footing while receiving relevant guidance and exposure.
Proven Impact: From Startup to Job Creator
The programme's success is reflected in the growth stories of past participants. One such example is Kwanele Mngoma, founder of KIK Refrigerator Rentals, whose business experienced significant expansion after winning a previous edition.
Mngoma revealed that the R40,000 prize enabled the company to purchase 10 additional refrigeration units—directly addressing a key operational bottleneck.
"The main challenge was never demand—it was capacity," he explained. "With the additional units, we were able to serve more customers, increase revenue, and stabilise operations."
Today, the business employs 10 people, demonstrating the programme's ripple effect on employment creation. Beyond funding, Mngoma highlighted the value of exposure, networking, and structured learning.
"The pitching sessions, masterclasses and mentorship sharpened our strategy and confidence. It opened doors for collaboration and long-term growth," he said.
Municipality Reinforces Commitment to SMME Development
Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, Thembo Ntuli, emphasised the competition's strategic importance in strengthening the city's entrepreneurial ecosystem.
"Over the years, the programme has empowered entrepreneurs to scale their businesses, create jobs, and build valuable networks. It remains a powerful platform for turning ideas into thriving enterprises," Ntuli said.
The municipality views SMMEs as a cornerstone of economic resilience, particularly in addressing unemployment and fostering inclusive growth.
