High Seas Tension: Israel's Controversial Interception of Aid Flotilla Near Greece
Israel intercepted aid ships attempting to break the Gaza blockade in international waters near Greece, describing it as part of a lawful naval blockade. The move sparked international criticism and claims of impunity. Despite coordination with Greece, the flotilla was halted, leading to detentions and diplomatic tensions across Europe.
In a dramatic escalation at sea, Israel has intercepted humanitarian aid ships bound for Gaza in international waters near Greece. The flotilla, described as the second Global Sumud initiative in recent times, aimed to challenge Israel's naval blockade by navigating from Barcelona to Gaza, organizers confirmed on Thursday.
Responding to the interception, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stated that actions were necessary to uphold the lawful blockade, with the cooperation of Greek authorities. The vessels were rerouted, and individuals aboard were set to be disembarked on a Greek beach, as per statements from both nations’ officials.
Reactions were swift and polarized. Flotilla organizers decried the move as piracy and unlawful, claiming expanded Israeli control over the Mediterranean. Germany and Italy expressed serious concerns, while Turkey labeled the incident a violation of international law. Footage of the interception showed Israeli military personnel boarding ships, escalating the situation further.
