Two U.S. service members participating in the African Lion joint military exercises have been reported missing near Tan Tan in southern Morocco, the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces announced on Sunday.
Search-and-rescue operations, incorporating ground, air, and maritime capabilities, have been launched by U.S., Moroccan, and partner forces to find the missing service members near the Cap Draa training site. Reports indicate the soldiers went missing near a cliff, according to separate statements by the two militaries.
The incident remains under investigation, with the search continuing. African Lion represents the largest annual joint exercise conducted by U.S. Africa Command, focusing on enhancing interoperability among U.S. forces, NATO Allies, and African partner nations. This year's event spans from April 27 to May 8, covering Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia, with Morocco hosting approximately 5,000 personnel from over 40 countries.
