A German national has died on a cruise ship experiencing a suspected hantavirus outbreak. The outbreak, confirmed only in a British passenger currently treated in South Africa, has left the ship anchored off Cape Verde, considering heading to Las Palmas or Tenerife for passenger disembarkation.

A German national was identified as the third fatality aboard a cruise ship grappling with a suspected hantavirus outbreak, according to a spokesperson for the ship's owner, Oceanwide Expeditions, on Monday.

The spokesperson confirmed that hantavirus has been verified in only one instance so far, a British passenger receiving treatment in South Africa.

The ship, presently anchored near Cape Verde, is contemplating sail routes to either Las Palmas or Tenerife for orderly disembarkation of passengers amid heightened health concerns.
