In a major step toward amplifying the global reach of Yoga, the Ministry of Ayush has initiated preparations for the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026, convening a high-level Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) meeting in New Delhi to chart a comprehensive roadmap for nationwide and international celebrations.

The meeting, chaired by Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, brought together senior officials from multiple ministries, leading Yoga gurus, and representatives of major Yoga institutions—signaling a coordinated push to transform Yoga into a truly universal movement for health and well-being.

From Practice to People's Movement

Addressing the gathering, the Minister highlighted how Yoga has evolved beyond a physical practice into a mass public movement promoting holistic health and lifestyle transformation.

Reflecting on the recent 50-day countdown event held in Hyderabad, he noted the surge in public enthusiasm and participation, emphasizing that Yoga is increasingly being embraced across demographics.

"Let us work together to ensure that IDY 2026 is celebrated with unprecedented public participation, effective coordination, and widespread awareness," Jadhav said.

Global Reach Expands Across 190+ Countries

Since its inception in 2015, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, International Day of Yoga has grown into one of the world's largest wellness movements, now observed in over 190 countries.

Officials expect participation to reach new heights in 2026, building on last year's milestone of over 26 crore (260 million) participants, with projections suggesting the number could exceed 30 crore (300 million) this year.

Whole-of-Government Strategy for Mass Outreach

The Ministry has outlined a multi-pronged strategy centered on a "whole-of-government approach", urging all departments to actively contribute to IDY 2026.

Key focus areas include:

  • Maximizing participation in the Common Yoga Protocol on June 21

  • Integrating Yoga into schools, workplaces, and healthcare systems

  • Ensuring outreach in rural, remote, and border areas

  • Leveraging digital platforms and social media for wider engagement

  • Ensuring time-bound implementation and monitoring of activities

The approach aims to embed Yoga into everyday life, rather than limiting it to a single-day observance.

Global Diplomacy Through Yoga

Highlighting India's soft power strategy, Shri Sibi George, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, confirmed that Indian embassies and missions worldwide will spearhead international celebrations.

These missions will coordinate:

  • Large-scale public events

  • Partnerships with local organisations

  • Community outreach initiatives

He cited ongoing global initiatives such as a six-month Yoga programme in Japan, which has seen encouraging participation and reflects Yoga's growing international acceptance as a tool for mental and physical well-being.

Science-Backed Benefits and Role in Public Health

Experts at the meeting emphasized the increasing body of scientific evidence supporting Yoga's effectiveness in:

  • Improving mental health and stress management

  • Preventing and managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs)

  • Enhancing overall physical fitness and lifestyle balance

Yoga is now being positioned not just as a cultural practice but as a public health intervention aligned with global wellness goals.

Focus on Youth, Innovation, and Inclusivity

Deliberations also stressed:

  • Greater youth participation

  • Innovative digital engagement strategies

  • Integration with national health missions

  • Inclusive outreach targeting underserved communities

Stakeholders underscored the need to make Yoga accessible to all sections of society, ensuring equitable participation across regions and socio-economic groups.

A Global Campaign Beyond a Single Day

Officials reiterated that IDY is not merely a one-day event but part of a sustained global campaign promoting holistic living, balance, and preventive healthcare.

With structured planning, expanded partnerships, and increasing global enthusiasm, the Ministry of Ayush expressed confidence that IDY 2026 will further cement India's leadership in wellness diplomacy.

As preparations gather pace, the upcoming International Day of Yoga is poised to become one of the largest synchronized global health movements—uniting millions in pursuit of physical well-being, mental harmony, and inner peace.
