Ecuador Cuts Tariffs on Colombian Imports Amid Trade Tensions
Ecuador announced a reduction in tariffs on Colombian imports from 100% to 75%, aiming to alleviate months of trade tensions. The decision reflects Ecuador's commitment to bilateral cooperation and border development. The move follows reciprocal tariff hikes and political disagreements over trade deficits and security issues.
Ecuador has decided to reduce import tariffs on goods from Colombia, lowering the rate from 100% to 75%. This development comes after prolonged trade tensions between the two South American neighbors.
Both Ecuador and Colombia have engaged in imposing increased tariffs on each other’s imports amid disputes over trade deficits and border security issues. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa underscored his nation’s intent on bolstering bilateral cooperation and fostering growth in border regions.
The issue remains contentious, with Colombia's President Gustavo Petro rebutting allegations of negligence in tackling drug trafficking. Meanwhile, trade and electricity exchanges have faced disruptions due to the tariffs, affecting nearly 190 products and proving challenging for both nations.
