A catastrophic explosion at a fireworks factory in China's Hunan province has resulted in the death of 21 people and injuries to 61 others, according to state media reports on Tuesday. President Xi Jinping has urged a comprehensive investigation into the disaster, which unfolded at a major fireworks manufacturing hub.
Footage from social media revealed thick plumes of smoke against clear skies over lush landscapes, confirmed by Reuters as being in Changsha. The video also displayed widespread destruction, with collapsed buildings and debris marking the site of the tragic incident.
Emergency response teams, comprising nearly 500 personnel and deploying rescue robots, undertook a coordinated search operation. Authorities identified two high-risk black powder storage sites at the factory, leading to the evacuation of nearby residents and the establishment of control zones. While the exact cause is still under investigation, China's President has called for swift accountability and improved safety measures in hazardous industries.
