Project Freedom: Protecting Commerce in the Strait of Hormuz
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the U.S. temporarily launched Operation Project Freedom to safeguard commercial shipping from Iranian threats in the Strait of Hormuz. This defensive operation aims to maintain peace, emphasizing that no American forces will enter Iran’s territory or engage in unnecessary conflict.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth clarified on Tuesday that America's new operation to protect commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz is a short-term measure. Washington, he asserted, seeks no escalation with Iran. Dubbed 'Project Freedom,' the operation was initiated by President Donald Trump on Monday.
'Project Freedom is defensive in nature, focused in scope, and temporary in duration, with the sole mission of safeguarding innocent commercial shipping from Iranian aggression,' Hegseth stated. He emphasized that American forces will not enter Iranian territories, as the mission does not necessitate it.
The announcement comes amidst rising tensions, as the U.S. and Iran exchanged fire on Tuesday, challenging the stability of a delicate truce in the Middle East over control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
