Hungary's Media Shake-Up: GVH Investigates Indamedia's Controversial Ringier Acquisition

Hungary's competition authority GVH has initiated a probe into Indamedia's acquisition of Ringier Hungary's assets. The transaction, linked to Viktor Orban's government, was not initially reported due to its revenue size. New data warranted a probe amid concerns over media pluralism and influence on editorial independence.

Hungary's competition authority, GVH, announced Tuesday that it is launching a probe into Indamedia Network's 2025 acquisition of assets from Ringier Hungary. The move aims to address controversies surrounding the transaction.

Indamedia, which is partially owned by an associate of outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, acquired the portfolio, including Hungary's prominent tabloid Blikk, late last year. The announcement preceded an election win for Peter Magyar's centre-right party, ending Orban's long-standing rule.

GVH noted that despite the deal's revenue not requiring mandatory reporting, new information received in March prompted the investigation. An expert highlighted the European Media Freedom Act's relevance, as the European Board for Media Services has expressed concern over the deal's impact on media pluralism.
