In a significant legal turn, a sessions court has acquitted Sunil Chitnis, a union leader linked to the Shiv Sena, in a 2015 case involving insulting a woman's modesty. The decision overturns a prior magistrate's conviction.
On Tuesday, Additional Sessions Judge S S Adkar concluded that the prosecution's failure to present conclusive evidence led to the ruling in favor of Chitnis. The original incident occurred on July 3, 2015, at a civic-run hospital in Mumbai.
The case centered on an alleged incident where Chitnis questioned a matron's job performance, leading to an offensive remark accusation. Previously convicted in May 2022 under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code, Chitnis has now successfully appealed, with the judge stating that false implication could not be ruled out.
