In a continued push to strengthen regional maritime cooperation, the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar—INS Sunayna—arrived at Yangon Harbour on May 4, 2026, marking a key milestone in India's strategic outreach in the Indian Ocean Region.

The port call coincides with the visit of Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), underscoring the growing focus on enhancing bilateral naval ties between India and Myanmar.

Ceremonial Welcome and Naval Diplomacy

The arrival of INS Sunayna was marked by a ceremonial reception by the Myanmar Navy, setting the tone for a series of professional and cultural engagements.

During the visit, Myanmar Navy officials will host the Indian crew for formal interactions aimed at strengthening mutual understanding and cooperation between the two maritime forces.

Focus on Professional Exchange and Training

A range of activities has been planned to deepen operational and institutional collaboration, including:

  • Visits to Myanmar Navy training establishments

  • Exchange of best practices and operational insights

  • Friendly sports fixtures to foster camaraderie among personnel

These engagements are designed to build interoperability, trust, and long-term partnership between the two navies.

Advancing India's MAHASAGAR Vision

The deployment of INS Sunayna is part of India's broader maritime strategy under MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across Regions)—a vision aimed at promoting security, stability, and cooperation across the Indian Ocean Region.

Through such port calls and joint activities, the Indian Navy continues to play a proactive role in:

  • Enhancing regional maritime security

  • Supporting capacity-building among partner nations

  • Strengthening diplomatic and defence ties

Reinforcing 'Neighbourhood First' Policy

The visit also aligns with India's Neighbourhood First policy, which prioritises engagement with neighbouring countries to build trust and foster collaborative development.

Myanmar, given its strategic location and shared maritime interests, remains a key partner in India's regional security architecture.

Strengthening Regional Maritime Cooperation

As geopolitical dynamics evolve in the Indo-Pacific, such engagements highlight India's commitment to constructive maritime diplomacy and rules-based cooperation.

The visit of INS Sunayna to Yangon not only reinforces defence ties but also reflects a broader effort to ensure peaceful, secure, and cooperative maritime environments in the region.
