The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to launch an eco-friendly initiative by providing free cremation services through electric and CNG facilities. This move focuses on reducing air pollution while promoting greener last rites.
Civic authorities are in the process of transferring the operations of 33 crematoriums to voluntary organizations. Once completed, the free service is expected to commence next month and run initially for two years. The involved NGOs will receive support of around Rs 500 per cremation to manage maintenance and repair expenses for the electric and CNG furnaces.
The project aligns with MCD's vision for sustainable practices, with current CNG-based facilities at nine locations across Delhi. An official stated that a new crematorium at Sarai Kale Khan, complete with CNG and electric furnaces, will soon become operational. This initiative not only alleviates financial burdens on families but also champions environmental responsibility.
