Safe Passage: U.S.-Flagged Vessels Navigate Hormuz Straits Amidst Tensions
The U.S.-flagged chemical tanker CS Anthem recently completed its transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil trade. This development comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran, with U.S. military protection ensuring the safe exit of commercial vessels like the CS Anthem.
The U.S.-flagged chemical tanker CS Anthem has successfully navigated the perilous Strait of Hormuz, its operator confirmed on Tuesday. This makes it the second U.S.-flagged commercial vessel to complete this journey under U.S. military protection, as tensions with Iran continue to escalate.
According to Maersk, its Alliance Fairfax vehicle carrier, flagged in the U.S. and operated by Farrell Lines, also exited the Gulf via the strait without incident. The CS Anthem's transit marks a critical development for the several U.S.-flagged ships stranded in the region following the eruption of conflict on February 28.
In a bid to restore secure commercial shipping through the Hormuz Strait, CENTCOM announced Monday that U.S. Navy destroyers are currently operational in the Gulf. The military initiative, dubbed 'Project Freedom,' underscores the strategic significance of this vital waterway, through which 20% of the world's oil once flowed before Iran's blockade and the subsequent U.S. countermeasures.
