In a striking disclosure, RJD MP Manoj Jha has expressed deep concern over the increasing 'normalisation of hate' across society, underscoring how electoral gains are often prioritized over safeguarding India's social fabric. He was addressing the audience at the launch of the 'Hate Crime Tracker' by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) on Tuesday.
The MP highlighted the stalled progress of a private member's bill on hate crimes, and noted the alarming integration of hatred into daily life. 'We are at a crossroads where the essence of India, grounded in constitutional values, must compete with short-term political objectives,' he stated, advocating for enhanced documentation and judicial accountability.
Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh pointed out the discrepancy between official and independently tracked data, critiquing media narratives that amplify polarisation. Activist Harsh Mander and journalist Qurban Ali reinforced these concerns, citing increased hostility against minorities and inadequate responses to hate speech. The APCR database reveals 1,914 hate incidents since 2014, with Uttar Pradesh leading the statistics.
